12th March 2006, Wanderers , SA ..(A poetic description of the highest scoring 50ovr match ever)

It was a batting pitch without doubt
The spectators will have a lot to shout about
The Aussies won the toss ‘n elected to bat
And to watch the battle of the titans all the spectators sat

Gilchrist and Katich started with a flourish
The Protean bowlers did more than just blemish
Gilchrist got out at 55
And the Proteas hoped that they would survive

Then came the Aussie punter
Talking about runs who was a hunter
With Katich ‘n Ponting in the middle, the Aussies were cruising
While the SA’n bowlers were left bruising

The Aussies got to 216 for 2
The Proteas were left with a lot to rue
Hussey came in and looked as fit as a fiddle
There weren’t many he couldn’t middle

As the Assies crossed 370
It looked as if we were watching 20-20
Came in next was the hardest hitter of them all
Man, the Assies were having a ball

When the Aussies crossed the 400 run barrier
The Proteas must have felt they were being chased by a terrier
Dippennar got Ponting with a boundary line catch
The Aussies looked sure to take the match

Symonds and Lee took Australia to 434
They definitely looked hungry for more
With the marathon Aussie innings finished
The Proteas sure, needed to get replenished

The Proteas got off to a flying start
The SA’n captain looked a player really smart
Dippennar dipped with 3 on the board
Herchelle Gibbs came in to balance the load

Gibbs played shots nothing less than swashbuckling
Every Aussie fielder was made to run like a duckling
SA reached 100-2 in over number 13
Inspite of the Aussie fielding being mean

Smith parted when the score was 190
Inpite of which the Proteas looked jaunty
With smith gone Gibbs took charge
The Proteas must have sensed that night they were in for a large

DeVilliers parted when SA was 284
But Gibbs was the man they did adore
Kallis came in next but didn’t make much
Just couldn’t help it, the pressure was such

Gibbs was going ballistic till SA were 299
When the Aussies struck the Gibbs goldmine
So Gibbs departed playing one of the best innings of all time
If you haven’t witnessed it you committed an unpardonable crime

As wickets for SA kept tumbling
Boucher came in & anchored the innings without mumbling
The run chase made the SA’ns strive higher
We all believed the match would go down to the wire

Boucher held his end sensing he would again be a winner
The Proteas must have sensed kangaroo soup for dinner
The SA’ns batted down till number 9
Each one of them must have felt “This game is mine”

Boucher got strike at 434
Open for them was the winners door
Lee bowled the penultimate delivery
And Boucher sent it straight to the boundary

So while Ponting kept rubbing his chin
The Proteas pulled out a clean win
The SA’ns had every reason to be merry
Boy ! this was a match no one would forget in a hurry

This marked the end of one of the best games ever played
Wherein the pendulum both sides swayed
That night the the Proteas had miss Winning to date
Ponting must have enviously said “We’ll getcha next time mate !!”

USOPEN FINAL - 2009

What a mind blowing final!!! havn't witnessed a FIVE SETTER final in a long time...but boy, what a contest between a 1st time grand slam finalist against a playing legend....just doesn't get better than this. DEL POTRO truly deserves it. d young lad's got loads of guts n potential blended amazingly with his soft n straight from d heart attitude off the court(google up his press conference videos).

Well Federer gave it everything he had but it would be fair enough to say it just wasn't his day. Big finals....big moment....Federer had no reason to show any signs of nervousness n have to give credit to the young lad Juan Martin Del Potro because he didn't show any signs of the same either but you know what , that is exactly what makes for a good final when you have nothing on your mind but just the game ahead.

Del Potro seemed to be absolutely fearless in his approach towards Federer, unfazed by his stature, unperturbed by the fact that the majority of the Tennis fraternity have already declared Federer as the winner of the duel that was to go on between them. Almost everybody must have had the image of Federer on their minds after he took the 1st set but few must have expected Del potro to come back so strongly after that. Big serves, good movement, a great eye, great stamina and no nerves proved to be the assets the Argentine used to the fullest to win his 1st Grand Slam. He kept his word he gave to the US OPEN fans when he said after his semi-final win over Nadal that "I promise i will fight till the end for every single point". That left the score board at 3-6,7-6,4-6,7-6,6-2 in Del Potro's favour. In a well fought match though statistics are just that....numbers. So to get the real feel of what happened do check out vid's for the same on Youtube or usopen.org.

Del Potro showcased mixed emotions after he made it. He wanted to enjoy the moment but he just lay flat on the court and started sobbing heavily. Anybody who has ever really worked hard for something and finally got it has gone through the same. What a moment...really feel for the new champ. For Federer though it must have been a different story, just goes on to show that no matter how good you are there is always someone better than you out there. Young lads just come and sideline the once greats this way. That's the nature of any sport , has been and will be... after all that is exactly what makes it so exciting. Got to give a lot of credit to Federer for handling defeat as gracefully as he would have handled a win.

Just goes on to show that you can never rule out anything in sport. The world may call it one of the biggest upsets in tennis history but i call it just another day in the world of sport. Who doesn't like an underdog winning when d statistics are stacked up against them ?.....no one.
